National BSA has come up with a neat search engine that uses your zip code to search its membership database to find a troop near you. If you're a parent searching for a pack or troop and don't know where to begin this is a great idea. The list is oriented to Orange County only so you don't have to look at units in other counties.
The web site address is http://www.ocscouting.org
This is almost identical to the search for Cub Packs at joincubscouting.org
My only gripe is that they do not provide direct contact information for the troops. The search only shows the city and the name of the chartered organization. Some of them are easily identifyable but many are names like "parents of troop ###" which would be hard to locate without first calling the coucil office.
I guess we should be thankful for the progress on this, I just hope they are still working on more enhancements.
I think the issue with the searches is privacy. A person searching for contact information for pack/troop in their vicinity would have to contact the council and would probably be put in touch with the District Executive (DE).
There's probably a bunch of people who don't wish a phone number or address posted on the Internet.
